Our pets play an integral part in our daily lives. They are often our only "children" and are a vital part of our families. Pets are an unending source of unconditional love and support: always faithful to those they love. For true animal lovers, the human animal bond is a very real and intense attachment.

As our pets age, we are often faced with losing them to old age or disease. A loss such as this can be a truly agonizing ordeal. Unfortunately, this is something over which we often have no control. Many times we have animals who are stolen, run away or get lost. The sadness we experience is heart wrenching. We search and search, in an effort to retrieve our lost companions. Hopefully, we are lucky and a happy reunion occurs. Many times, however, our pets are never returned, and we can only hope that they are safe and happy with someone else who cares for them properly. How can you avoid this situation?

There are several things you can do to help increase your chances of a happy return. Pets should wear identification tags on their collars. Identification tags and rabies vaccination tags can help the finder relocate these wayward companions. Animals can also be tattooed for permanent identification. Many veterinarians are able to tattoo registration numbers on dogs or cats, which can then be traced back to an owner.

Another means of permanently identifying your pets is with a microchip that is inserted under the skin on the back of the neck, through a needle, much like other injections. Animal shelters and pounds have scanning devices to identify these microchips, so that the proper owners can be notified. Ask our staff at JRPH for advice in determining what would be best for you and your furry friends.

Thousands of dogs and cats are lost each year, and are never returned to their original owners. Please do not let this tragedy happen to your loving companions. You should consider a method of permanent identification to maximize your chances of having your pets returned home safely.

JRPH currently uses the Home Again Microchip. For further information about tattoos or microchip implantation, please ask one of our staff members, or call us at 972-446-0667.
